Stains on the wall, weeks after moving in

You've just moved in. The walls look great. A week later there's a fingerprint in the hallway, a splash of soup in the kitchen and a mysterious chalk mark in the hall that your child denies making. With standard latex there's not much you can do: wiping it just leaves a dull patch where the paint has worn away.

Washable latex on Renovlies solves this. No damage marks, no dull smears, just a damp cloth and you're done. Below we explain when it makes sense, what it costs and where it does and doesn't work.

What is washable latex?

Washable latex (also called wipe-clean latex) is a type of paint specifically designed to withstand mechanical cleaning. Unlike standard wall paint, this latex doesn't absorb the stain into the paint layer but keeps it at the surface. That means you can remove it with a damp cloth (and a mild cleaning agent if needed).

On a Renovlies wallpaper base, washable latex works particularly well: the Renovlies provides a smooth, closed surface without pore absorption, so the latex adheres evenly and the washable function is at its best.

Who is this relevant for?

In practice, we see it most often with:

  • Families with young children: fingerprints, felt-tip experiments, marks next to the dining table.
  • People with pets: noses and paws against the wall in the hallway.
  • Kitchens : cooking splashes, oil vapour.
  • Hallways and stairwells : frequent contact with hands, coats, shoes.
  • Children's rooms and play corners : anything a child can come up with.

For quiet bedrooms, a home office or a living room without children, washable latex is a luxury. Not a necessity, but a comfortable one. Still deciding between different finishes? Read our comparison Renovlies or plastering.

Protect your walls from day one

Have you just moved into a new-build or a renovated home? This is the perfect moment to apply washable latex. Once the first marks appear, it becomes harder to repaint without colour differences.

On a Renovlies base with washable latex you get:

  • Impact resistant (Renovlies is strong)
  • Shrinkage crack resistant (Renovlies absorbs movement)
  • Washable (latex can be cleaned)
  • Easy to repair for larger damage (Renovlies can be replaced locally)

How durable is washable latex?

Good washable latex lasts for years with normal use. With intensive cleaning (wiping daily) you may notice a slight change in sheen over time on the most frequently cleaned spots. Similar to how a kitchen table top gradually looks different where it gets the most use.

In practice: families with children typically ask for a fresh coat of latex roughly every 8 to 12 years. That's a fraction of the effort compared to having to redo the entire wall.

Where do you use it?

Possible in almost any room, but especially recommended in:

  • Kitchen : splashes and oil vapour
  • Entrance and hallway : hand contact when coming and going
  • Stairwell : hands along the wall, bags brushing past
  • Children's room and playroom : everything
  • Bathroom (partly) : check moisture resistance, not for direct shower exposure
  • Commercial spaces : restaurants, offices, hair salons

Colours and finishes

Washable latex is available in virtually every RAL colour and in various sheen levels:

  • Matt : hides surface imperfections, gives a calm look.
  • Silk gloss : adds a subtle sheen, easier to clean.
  • Gloss : reflects light, ideal for darker rooms, but shows imperfections more.

For Renovlies bases we usually recommend matt to silk gloss. That combination gives the smoothest, most plaster-like finish. Want to explore the full colour range? Read Renovlies colours and finishes.
